READY! SET! GO!

By Judy Haughton-James

It is a time of excitement for me as I am a big sports fan. Yippee!  The World Games are on in Daegu, South Korea! Over the years Janine and I have been big fans of these games. You would see us seated in our living-room with our eyes glued to the television taking in the events.

As Jamaicans excelled on the track we would cheer and oh what a thrill it was when we saw the Jamaican flag held aloft by fans or making its way up a pole as our national anthem was played.  I will never forget the joy Janine shared with me a few months before her death in 2008 as she watched every moment of Jamaica's exceptional performance at the Olympics.

We have always been big sports fans paying close attention to athletics, football, cricket,  netball etc. We watched and listened  to sports newscasts  and sports programmes so much that we knew even some of the results and names of  top personalities in games that we were not necessarily big fans of.

Well, there was some disappointment today when our top athlete, Usain Bolt, was disqualified in the men's 100m race. Anyway Jamaicans had something to cheer about as another Jamaican, Yohan Blake, won the race and became the youngest world champion ever over this distance.

Sports certainly teaches us life lessons. It makes us realize that nothing is certain in life and  the winner is only known after the event. Anyway I hope Usain will bounce back. As one of my favourite quotations states "It is not whether you get knocked down, it is whether you get back up." - Vince Lombardi

If there is one game that I would like to learn how to play and get some good exercise in the process, it would be lawn tennis. I tried table tennis in the past but just for a little fun. If you are a sports fan, which game is your favourite? Is there a game that you wish you played or are currently playing?

Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

This post actually brings up a couple questions and issues I have with my twins. They are actually my twin sisters but I have stepped in to raise them because my parents have been dealing with some serious medical issues.

Now that the two of them are a little older and more serious about the sports and activities they are in, they are more competitive about things. How did you and your sister deal with competition? Neither one of the twins wants to outdo the other, but they struggle because they both know that they have strengths and I am trying to help them see that it is okay for one to excel at one thing and the other to excel at the other thing, but still both be able to enjoy the same sport and the competition.

First I must say that I am sorry about the health problems that your parents are facing. I am thrilled to hear that you have twin sisters. Janine and I did not have a problem with competition in sports, maybe because we watched sports, rather than participated in it!:) Nevertheless we were put in different houses at high school. On Sports day it created no problem when she was cheering for the Franciscans and I cheered for the Josephites. In other areas of our lives we knew that in some instances one was stronger than the other and we accepted it. Tell your sisters that it is okay for one to be better than the other in sports and other activities. Twins can show a lot of similarities but they should also realize that there are some differences and that is okay. I think that you are so right to let them know that it is okay for one to excel at one thing and the other at another thing. Some twins do well at the same things while others don't and they should accept that and still enjoy their twinship. It is great that they have you there for them. All the best to you, your sisters and parents.

I'm glad to visit here. My father has also a twin, not good in sports but they look alike. Blessings to both of you.

Thanks for visiting my Blog Unfailing Love. I note that your father has a twin. Janine and I were also not good at sports! Great sports fans though!:)

I'm so sorry about Janine. I can't imagine what it's like to lose a sibling, let alone a twin. I love my brothers so much, can't imagine ever being in a world without them.

As for sports... I've never been into competitive sports! I like dancing and martial arts. =)

I love sports, but am an only child so I watched most of them with my dad :) I competed in track and swimming in high-school and love them both! My husband and two boys are obsessed with football (American), but I'm not as big of a fan :) Have a great week!

Hi Frugal in WV,
I see that you were quite active in sports in high school. I tried a few games in Physical Education classes but did not turn out to be a great runner like our current athletes!:) Take care and my best wishes to you and your family.

The games were GREAT this year!!! Another world record for our beautiful Jamaica.

DD & DH watch sports together all of the time (He's Arsenal I'm ManU, can we say house divided?) but track is something we can all agree on.

I found your blog through the Tuesday Blog Hop and I'm so glad I have. I don't find many Jamaican blogger. I'm from Portland, DH St. Mary and we're in the US now. DD was also an identical Mo/Mo twin but her sister did not survive the pregnancy (uterine complications that almost took both girls). I look forward to reading more.

Hello Island Candi,
So great to link up with you! Our Jamaican athletes really did us well. It was a proud moment to see our national anthem end the closing ceremony. It was interesting reading what you said about your family. Guess what?! This is another Arsenal fan! LOL However I must admit that Manchester United is a great team!:) I am sorry to hear that DD also lost a twin. Early loss twins go through a lot of what later loss twins experience so it demands a lot of understanding. I know this as I belong to a number of twinless twins and Twin Loss groups and I have read books, articles etc. on this. It has not been easy but I am fighting on.Thanks for becoming a Follower of my Blog. I will be heading over to your Blog. Take care.
