9/11 - FACING DEATH AND GRIEF

I can still remember those frightening moments when my twin sister and I stood in front of the television watching the horrible situation that unfolded on September 11, 2001.  So many persons knew individuals who died or families, friends or acquaintances who suffered the loss of a family member or friend.  The loss of a loved one is a very difficult experience to handle and especially when he/she departs in a terrorist attack or suddenly.

Recently I learnt that of the nearly 3,000 persons who were killed about 46 were one of twins. I understand that a documentary titled 'The Twins Of The Twin Towers' will be shown on this anniversary that explores the personal stories of twins who were left twinless. According to the link "The film delves into the unique connection these brave siblings shared and the process they have endured for dealing with their devastating loss and moving forward with their lives."  The movie produced by BBC Wales was directed and produced by Olivia Lichtenstein and executive produced by Tim Green.

It is very difficult to find words that comfort those who grieve the loss of a loved one especially in a situation as 9/11. However I would like to share these words that I have found comforting since the loss of my twin sister:-

"Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
          Unseen, unheard but always near.
Still loved, still missed and very dear."

P.S. Update 2 p.m. Sunday, September 11. I listened to the midday news on one of our radio stations  and it was stated that about 16 Jamaicans died. This tragedy certainly touched the world.

I can't imagine what it would be like to lose my sister. And being a twin, it must have been even harder, since twins share such a unique bond. I can't believe there were 40 something twins who passed away in the towers! That's a lot. Love the poem. And thanks for stopping by the Sit and Relax weekend hop.

I found your blog at Twinpossible's blog hop. I used to live in Jamaica, out inna de bush - LOL! I lived on a farm just at the border of Clarendon and St. Catherine. I was a foreigner and am back in the U.S. now. I have infant identical twin sons and am so touched by your remembrances. I can only hope that my boys can have the kind of relationship you and your sister had (still have!). Do you still live in Ja? I love the photos of you and your sister and of Jamaica. You are both so beautiful. Much love!

Hi Vivian,
I really believe that I will see my sister again. I just read a post by a twinless twin in the Twinless Twins Facebook group who said she watched the documnetary. She does not live in Jamaica. I am sure it was enlightening. To be honest I would be a bit scared to watch it but I would like to see a written report of some of the facts that it revealed. Take care and have a good week.

I have never had a sibling, but my children are very close. Granted they are only 2 and 8 months, but I can only imagine how they would act if the other was gone for whatever reason. They share a room and play with each other all the time...so I'm sure it would very difficult for them both.

Thank you for sharing. I've been reading SO many blogs today about 9/11. It is hard to do, because of the sadness of that day, but I love learning about others and how they experienced the event and what it has done to changed their lives... :)

And I love the quote you included:

"Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard but always near.
Still loved, still missed and very dear."

Again, thanks for sharing!

Unknown said...

Thanks Stephanie! I am glad you like the quote. 9/11 affected the world. Some 16 Jamaicans died. Yesterday I heard a talk show with some Jamaicans telling about their experiences and how they escaped and it must have been so frightening. I hope something like this never happens again. Take care.
